AUGUST 25 READING…EPHESIANS 1
It becomes clear very quickly as we begin to read the book of Ephesians that the primary intent of Paul is to glorify Jesus above all things. He begins by blessing God, Jesus, and speaking of the Holy Spirit as our guarantee of salvation. Here Paul emphasizes the Godhead…Father, Son, and Holy Spirit. This is the Trinity, and these Three are One. It is God who works His marvelous work of salvation toward us according to His perfect purpose, and by His grace we are made acceptable to Him through His Son, Jesus Christ. For it is Jesus who was raised from the dead, and is now seated in the place of authority at the right hand of His Father. He is the one who is far above all principality and power, might and dominion…and all things are put under His feet, for He is the head of the church…the church is His body.
Paul uses a term several times in this first chapter that again puts the emphasis on Jesus. He uses over and over again the term “in Him”. Since we are the church, and we are His body…therefore, everything we are, or ever will be, is found, “in Him”. Look at what Paul says we are, and have “in Him”. “In Him” we have redemption…forgiveness of sin. “In Him” we are all gathered together here on earth and in heaven. “In Him” we are sealed by the Holy Spirit. “In Him” we are the church. Everything we are, and everything we will ever be, is found “in Him”. It is eternally important that we understand that it really is all about Jesus…its all about what we are “in Him”. The only thing that matters to God, and therefore should matter to us, is Jesus…and what it means to be “in Him”.
