AUGUST 2 DEVOTIONAL BIBLE READING:   2 CORINTHIANS 3:12-18

Just listening to someone teach the Word can only take us so far. We are each called to be in the Word, reading it, studying it, meditating on it, so we can we can be applying it. Many in the church have let someone else's study of the Word become their only "study" of the Word. To be sure, God has blessed us with teachers, but that was never meant to replace individual time in the Word with the Holy Spirit of God being our teacher. We need to make sure we don't become "pew potatoes"... sitting and soaking in and never becoming personally active in our own time in the Word.

The Scripture tells us that we are to be a discerning people. Those that are able to distinguish between that which is true and that which is false. Discernment is not a feeling...it is knowing based on the leadership of the Holy Spirit through the Word. We can't even know which spirit is leading us without the Word...for we are told to discern the spirits to find out if they are of God. We are to discern if someone who professes to be teaching us the Scripture is a true or false teacher. We are to discern those who call themselves prophets. How do we do this? Again, it is not a feeling...it is not based on whether we like them or not...or whether we like their style or approach...it not based on their position in a religious organization; we discern by being in the Word and using the truth of God's Word to evaluate what's being said. That's how we know.

We are called to be people of the Word that is not a call to merely have it...but to be in it and to do it!
