APRIL 9 DEVOTIONAL BIBLE READING: MATTHEW 5:3
There is a need to realize that we are all "poor in spirit" if we are going to see the Kingdom of Heaven. Everyone is literally spiritually bankrupt...the sad thing is that some will never realize it. It is at the place of realizing that spiritually we are without hope...we are completely bankrupt...we are without God, that we are brought to the place where we realize our great need for Jesus. Those who think they are well need no doctor. Those who think they are rich need no aid. Those who are self-sufficient need no help. Those who are proud need no one. Those who think they are right and good need no Savior. It is those who are "poor in spirit"...that realize they need a Savior and come humble and broken before the Lord, seeking His grace and mercy unto salvation.
It is hard to admit we need help...but we all do. It is hard to admit that we are wrong...but we all are. It is hard to admit that we are not good in ourselves...but none of us are. We are all sinners in need of a Savior. The problem with too many people is that they will not admit their need, because it would require them to honestly look at themselves. We live in a society where everyone is told they are good, even when they are not. We are presented a "god" that doesn't care what you believe, or if you believe...one that encourages you to be proud of your pride...one that tells you that you are innately good and don't need a Savior, just be religious. The God of the Bible requires brokenness in order to come to Him...He requires the realization and confession of sin...and He requires us to come to Him and fully trust in the only Savior, Jesus. Only the "poor in spirit" can and will do this!
