APRIL 26 DEVOTIONAL BIBLE READING: PROVERBS 18:24

I have to say that I have been very blessed of God in that He has given me many wonderful friends in my life. Some I don't get to see much anymore and some are already in heaven. These are people the Lord has put in my life that are able to speak truth to me and challenge me in my walk. The variety of friends through the years is truly amazing to behold. Some thought and believed like me, while others were completely opposite in their beliefs and lifestyle. There have certainly been those who were and are close friends who I would trust with my life and could say whatever they felt led to without it affecting our friendship. That is not true of all people, in my life or in yours. I am thankful to God for the many friends who really do, "stick closer than a brother" (Proverbs 18:24).

What is true about genuine friendship is that in order to have friends we must be a friend. Healthy friendships are never a one-way street. In friendships there must be honesty and truth, always tempered by love. We know we have a true friend when you can trust them with that which is most precious to us. We don't do this with just anybody. Ultimately, the greatest expression of biblical friendship is when we are willing to, "lay down our life for a friend" (John 15:13). Those are the words of Jesus and though they mean the willingness to die for a friend, I believe they also speak of being willing to live for a friend...by placing them first!
