SEPTEMBER 1 READING…EPHESIANS 6

Paul begins the last chapter of this book by giving instruction to believers in two different areas of life. He speaks to the children in Christian homes. He instructs them to obey their parents. Yes, I know that verbiage is not popular in our permissive society…but where there is no obedience to parents properly raising their children in the Lord, you will have unruly and selfish children who grow into unruly and selfish adults. Paul makes sure to tell the fathers to raise their children properly. The father is primarily responsible before God for how the children are raised…of course both father and mother are to be actively involved in the proper raising of the children. Then Paul speaks to servants (we might say employees), and their need to serve their masters (employers) rightly. They are to serve as servants of Christ. Paul then warns masters (employers) to treat their people properly…for they too are servants of the Lord.

As Paul closes this letter he gives us instruction in how we are to be prepared and equipped to live in this world. He reminds us that our battle is not with “flesh and blood”, in other words, we are not fighting the people who oppose us, and hold a different worldview. We are told our battle is with principalities and powers, the spiritual forces of wickedness in high places. This being true we need to be equipped by God. Paul uses the example of how a Roman soldier is prepared for battle to speak of our preparation. We are to put on the whole armor of God…and then we are to STAND. Don’t get weak in the knees Christian…STAND UP! Gird your waist with the belt of truth. Put on the breastplate of Christ’s righteousness. On your feet wear the footwear that steps forward in the peace of God. Pick up and stand behind the shield of faith. And crown yourself with the helmet of salvation. Put in your hand the sword of the Spirit, which is the Word of God. And always be in communication with your “commander” (God) through prayer. God has never called us to anything He has not equipped us for…so put on the full armor of God, and STAND UP!
