OCTOBER 28 READING…HEBREWS 11
I am certain you have heard that Hebrews 11 is the “Hall of Faith”, and it is. But, even more the writer is reminding us that it has always been about faith…it has always been about our responding to God…our Creator and Lord. We are told that faith is not seen, for if it was it would not be faith…but it is hope based in evidence. This chapter takes us back to the dawn of human history…staring with the faith of Abel. It also reminds us that without faith it’s impossible to please God…why? Because the opposite of faith is disobedience…and our disobedience never pleases God. From Noah to Abraham and Sarah…these died never seeing the Promise…yet they died in faith, and are now seeing the Lord. From Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob to Moses…by faith they trusted God and He blessed them. Even Rahab is listed for her faith toward God.
We are reminded of those by faith who faced unimaginable horrors at the hands of the enemies of God. It reminds me that when people oppose us for following the Lord…they are really opposing God. People of genuine biblical faith have always faced persecution…for the world hates God, and those who trust in Him. They were tortured, mocked, scourged, chained, imprisoned, and killed. They were stoned, sawn in two, and killed by the sword. And yet they kept their faith…they responded to God and not to the persecution of mankind. The world was not worthy of them. We are called to do no less, and we have the gift of God’s Holy Spirit to provide what we need…but we must walk by faith.
