NOVEMBER 18 READING…1 JOHN 1
John begins his epistles in much the same way he does his gospel. John’s emphasis in his gospel was to speak of the Deity of Jesus. Now in his epistle he speaks of Jesus’ eternal nature, and the fact of His humanity. They were able to see, speak to, and even touch Jesus the eternal One. Jesus came in the flesh in order that those who believe in Him would have eternal life. The eternal One brings eternal life to all who believe. This good news brings us great joy. Now that we have this eternal life we are called to walk in the light of Christ. Since there is no darkness in Jesus…if we say we are in Him, yet walk in sin, we are lying. If we walk in His light, we have fellowship with Him and with other genuine believers…for the blood of Jesus has cleansed us from all sin.
Some might say, “but I still sin”. And you would be correct, we all still commit acts of sin…but, we do not continue to live in sin. Sin is no longer our lifestyle, nor is it our intentional practice. We hate sin…and we hate it when we commit acts of sin against God. But, the one who claims they do not sin is a liar…and even worse, they make God out to be a liar. These people are both delusional and dangerous. For they claim sinless perfection, and in doing so make themselves guilty of the sin of pride. The great thing for we who belong to God is the promise of His continued forgiveness for our acts of sin. We are required to confess (come into agreement with God about our sin) our sin, and He says He will cleanse our lives in order that we might walk in right relationship with the Lord. To declare that we do not commit sin is evidence that His Word is not in us.
