MAY 16 READING…1 SAMUEL 7-9 & PSALM 124

Be careful what you ask for…especially be careful when you keep asking God for something when He has already told you, “no”. God had blessed Israel in the making sure the Ark returned to Israel, and God gave them victory over the Philistines. Samuel was leading them, and though Samuel’s sons would not follow him…he continued to attempt to lead Israel in the way of the Lord. But…Israel wanted a king, even though Samuel told them that was not what God desired for them. God was to be their King…but that was not good enough. Just like today, when so many who profess to be Christian, desire to have other things in their lives, either along with Jesus, or to replace Him. Israel kept demanding a king, and then they made a horrible statement that brought God’s judgment on them. They said, “We want to be like other nations”. God had created them to be different, just like in Jesus we are called to be different than the world. God gave them what they wanted, and the kind of king they wanted in Saul. They would regret their desire to be like other nations…it would ultimately cost them more than they could have imagined. Anytime we desire to be like the world, rather than desiring Jesus alone, it will cost us more than we can imagine. The psalmist reminds of the fact of how horrible it would be if God were not on our side. Yet, we like Israel, push God out, and replace Him with that which brings harm. God is our only help…we need to trust Him implicitly!
