JANUARY 8 READING…GENESIS 16-18 & MATTHEW 2
In our reading today the theme is that our God has a plan for each of us…He does not need our help to accomplish His purpose, but He allows us to be a part. In Genesis we see that Sarai tried to help God fulfill His promise of a son for Abram. She influenced Abram to move ahead of God to accomplish that which only God could accomplish. Abram had sexual relations with Sarai’s handmaiden, Hagar. The result was not what was hoped…Ishmael was born, but he was not the son of promise. Only God could give the son of promise. Sadly, this decision would be costly, not only for those involved then, but for all of human history. Though Ishmael was not the son of promise, God still had a plan for him, and blessed him. Finally, God sends the son of promise through a miracle with Abram and Sarai…Isaac is born.
In Matthew chapter 2 we have once again God sending the Son of promise. Isaac was a type…Jesus is the fulfillment. As God’s hand was on Abram and Sarai, it was also on Mary and Joseph. He sends the wisemen to warn the family…and they flee to Egypt for safety. After a few years they return to Nazareth. So both from Egypt and Nazareth we have the Messiah coming. Both fulfilling the words of the prophets.
