FEBRUARY 15 DEVOTION BIBLE READING: JOHN 8:31-34
It is ironic that the one thing that brings real freedom is the one thing that is so hard to find today...truth. Far too many people see truth as a subjective thing...they will say, "you have your truth and I have mine." The big new thing today is "fake news"... but in reality, this is nothing new, mankind has been making up stories that fit their agenda and biases since the beginning of time. In the Scripture it was Cain who is recorded as the first man to make up his own truth. He knew that God had required a certain type of sacrifice to be offered to Him, but Cain said, "I have my own truth, my own standards and I will bring what I decide." Of course, because it was not the true sacrifice so God rejected it and He rejected Cain. Mankind is not the ones who determine truth, truth is neither relative nor is it subjective...truth is from God and it is both objective and eternal. Real truth is always true. It is for this reason that people have such problems with the Scripture. They desire for their "truth" to be ever changing to fit their ever-changing desires.
Isaiah the Prophet said the day would come when everything would be turned upside down...good would be bad and bad good...light would be dark and dark light...truth would become a lie and a lie the truth. It's not that such a thing could actually happen, but that would be the way mankind would treat the truth that God has given. Jesus said, "I am the Way, the TRUTH and the Life, no one comes to the Father except by Me." Christ and only Christ is the truth that will set us free. Yet most people will run away from this freeing truth and replace it with their own view of truth, only to find bondage rather than freedom. Jesus sets us free from that which enslaves us, for He is the embodiment of God's eternal truth. Come to Him, trust Him and know true freedom!
