AUGUST 23 READING…GALATIANS 5
When we think of Galatians 5 we almost always think of the “fruit of the Spirit” listed in this chapter. And while they are wonderful truths, in context Paul is speaking about the importance of not being a slave to the law. He wanted to make sure the believers stayed free in Jesus, and did not return to the Old Testament law which they could not possibly keep. He even says that an attempt to return to the law was a rejection of the grace of God in one’s life. They had allowed the false teaching Judaizers to convince them that they had to be circumcised in order to be right with God. Paul told them circumcision meant nothing to those in Christ. We cannot add anything to Christ, for it is Christ and Christ alone. It is not Jesus plus anything..it’s Jesus!
Paul sums up the Law in the same way Jesus did. And then he calls us to be led by the Spirit. He tells us that it is clearly evident when one is led by their flesh rather than the Spirit. Their conduct will show where their heart is...and whether it is right with God and they will inherit the kingdom of God. The list is quite extensive, but clear…and as a reminder he is not talking about those who slip into these sins, and then are remorseful for their action. He is talking about those who make these sins their lifestyle. Then Paul gives us a wonderful list of that which is evident of one who living a life controlled by the Holy Spirit. The Holy Spirit always produces His fruit in those who submit and surrender to Him.
